Someone told me that:
the Frankfurt School leads to a systematic devaluation of pleasure (you like pop songs instead of twelve-tone music? You’re a victim of the “administered society”).
Well, just have a look at the hits below. I mean, Enrique Iglesias’ song has more than one billion views. It’s a nice song, I like to dance it in pubs, but still…
Nothing against pop songs (more or less) but maybe, and I mean Maybe… we as humanity should reconsider the concept of pleasure…
I understand that the more difficult one piece of art is, the more difficult it is to like it, to get pleasure out of it. BUT taste can be trained. And that should happen in school, through television and new media, creating a virtuous circle instead of drowning in very enjoyable commercial shit. Sorry for French.
Now, please, listen to it. It’s one of the most beautiful peaces of art that humanity ever created:
(That’s a different one as, of course, the one with the most hits on youtube is not the best performance… and if you happen to find it played by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, well, go for it ;)
Oh, and by the way, here’s ‘One-dimensional man’ by Marcuse in pdf: Marcuse – One-Dimensional Man (Routledge, 1964,1991)
